reaching the island owing to a typhoon. The robbers seem to have got an inkling of impending danger, and the majority with their prisoners removed from the island before the arrival of a flotilla of 4 Chinese Gunboats and 1 Portuguese Gunbont sent by the Government of Macno, who also appear to have noticed what was afoot, with 200 Chinese troops graved on the scene.
The troops landed and searched the island, the
5 Gunboats co-operating. Four robbers were arrested and 2 rifles,
1 revolver mnd 8 muskets were found. Two of the robbers were identified by the boy mentioned in paragraph 2 and have been executed at Canton.
Previous to the raid the rbber who lacked
half a finger as described in paragraph 3 was arrested in Canton. He has been identified and has now been executed by the Chinese Authorities. I learn that the two robber chiefs who took part in
the raid at Nim Wan have surrendered themselves to the Chinese
Authorities and are now employed as minor Military Officers by the
Provincial Government for the suppression of piracy and robbery.
The quest for the 4 unfortunate men carried from Castle Penk still
continues.

His Britannic Majesty's Consul-General at
Canton who at present represents Portuguese interests there has
sent me a copy of the protest which the Portuguese Authorities
have addressed to the Chinese Authorities on the subject of the
passage of ar..ed Chinese forces through the inner harbour at
Macao without the permission of the Portuguese Authorities, and
of the subsequent landing of troops on the island of Wong Kam. I enclose copy of the reply by the Chinese Authorities which Ir. Wilton has communicated to me. It is not the fact that any person
connected with this requested the Police Authorities of Canton to
make arrests in Wong Kem. The facts are as stated in paragraph 4.
